Tiz' the Iowa Derby
Zabeel Racing's Tiz Now Tiz Then made it three wins in a row as he scored his first stakes victory in the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows on Friday night with jockey Miguel Mena aboard. The Tiznow son settled well off the pace on the outside in the mile-and-one-sixteenth event. He made his move five wide on the turn, gained the lead at the top of the stretch and won going away by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:41:69.
The bay colt has been on fire since being partnered with Mena and breaking his maiden on April 5th at Keeneland. He came back on May 8 at Churchill Downs to win his first level allowance condition and stepped up nicely tonight with a similar ride as his last two victories.
"He is probably training better now than at any time during his career," said trainer Eoin Harty. "Tonight he validated the faith we have had in him all along."
Tiz Now Tiz Then was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Trepidation.
Harty indicated that he was looking at the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 27 for the colt's next race.
