Reynaldothewizard casts spell in debut at Churchill
Zabeel Racing’s Reynaldothewizard mesmerized fans at Churchill Downs today with a magical debut performance in a 4 ½ furlong Maiden Special Weight with jockey Julian Leparoux at the helm. The two-year-old colt broke sharply, but settled behind the first three, taking plenty of dirt as he raced in a pocket around the turn. He made a four-wide move at the top of the stretch, finding a new gear and inhaling the competition in a hand ride to the wire where he won by five lengths under wraps in a final time of 51:51.
Leparoux, who never uncocked his stick said, "He could have gone to the lead out of the gate, but he relaxed nicely. He had a good kick turning for home and he won for fun."
The Speightstown son beat a well-regarded Street Cry colt who went off as the 8/5 favorite after being beaten just a neck at Churchill Downs in his debut on June 4 in a 5 ½ furlong race. Cutting back a furlong in distance, he was one of the pace setters and held on for the place in today’s event.
Reynaldothewizard was bred in Kentucky by Gibraltar Group Lp and was purchased at the February Fasig-Tipton Two Year Old in Training Sale for $775,000. He is out of the Meadowlake mare Holiday Runner.
