10/9/2004

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Darley Stable won two races from two starts at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, October 9. Savonarola (GB), a 4-year-old Machiavellian colt, rallied from 8th position at the quarter-pole to win by 3/4 of a length in an allowance event going 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course. The stable also won with 4-year-old Valiant Edge in a $40,000 claiming race going 1 mile on the turf.

Across the country at Belmont Park, Darley Stable's Balletto (UAE) captured the Frizette GI for two-year-old fillies, and later the stable finished second with Millennium Dragon in the Kelso Breeder's Cup Handicap GII. Trained by Tom Albertrani, Balletto (UAE) won by 3/4 of a length going a mile and a sixteenth under Corey Nakatani. Millennium Dragon, trained by Kiaran Mclaughlin, finished a length and a half behind Mr. O'Brien (IRE) going 1 mile on the turf under Richard Migliore.
