Shamoan sharp in Santa Anita downhill

Dick and Linda Laird's three-year-old gelding Shamoan (IRE) won a Maiden Special Weight going 6 1/2 furlongs on Santa Anita's downhill turf course in sharp fashion on Sunday, February 27 under Jose Valdivia, Jr. The Monashee Mountain gelding stalked close to a quick pace of 22, 45, and 108, gaining the lead in mid-stretch and winning gamely by 3/4 length. "His win was easier than it looked," said his owner Dick Laird after viewing the replay.

Shamoan (IRE) was purchased privately last September from Ireland and was beaten by a head in his American debut in January. "He ran too well not to win," said his trainer, Eoin Harty, of that race. "He came from well off the pace, showed a good turn of foot and was unlucky not to win."

The chestnut gelding was closer to pace on Sunday and won handily. Validivia was confident in riding the horse and urged him in the stretch with a left-handed wave of the stick.
