Walter's Charbonnier charges home
Mrs. Barbara Walter's 4-year-old gelding Charbonnier won an allowance event going 1 mile on the turf at Santa Anita on Saturday, closing gamely in a breathless finish to win by 3/4 length under jockey Alex Solis.
The Robannier homebred rated nicely in seventh position, made a big move at the 1/2 mile pole, and gained rapidly on the leaders in the stretch.
"He is a very professional horse who is getting better with time and racing," said his trainer Eoin Harty.
Bred in California by the Robert H. Walter Family Trust, Charbonnier is out of the Cost Conscious mare Charmalotta. He won an allowance condition two races back at Hollywood Park and was second in a stakes race at Santa Rosa in August. The bay gelding has boosted his earnings to $137,560, winning three times in 14 starts.
"He should give a good account of himself in the Cal Cup," said Harty.
