Darley's Sunboat sun-sational at Gulfstream
Darley Stable made its third visit to the winner's circle this month at Gulfstream Park on Thursday with 4-year-old Sunboat (GB) in a 1-mile Maiden Special Weight on the main track against ten opponents with jockey Javier Castellano up. The stable has tallied six wins from twelve starts since moving to South Florida in November.
The bay son of Machiavellian broke well and was given a chance to settle. He was caught between horses and was forced wide turning for home, but still managed to draw off and win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:36.3. In his previous start on December 5, he finished a game second on the turf going 1 1/8 miles, missing the victory by a neck. He backed up to a one-turn mile on the dirt on Thursday, proving himself to be multi-dimensional with both distance and surface.
"He ran a very promising race in breaking his maiden," said his trainer Eoin Harty. "It was a game effort and showed a lot of versatility."
Sunboat (GB) was bred in Great Britain by Moon Valley Stud and is out of the Nashwan mare One So Wonderful (GB). He was making only his third career start after finishing fourth in his debut race on September 14, 2005.
Harty expects the colt to continue his progress, saying, "He still looked quite green and there would appear to be a lot of improvement in him."
