Shamoan sharpens after Dubai
Dick and Linda Laird's Shamoan (IRE) hung on to win a 1 1/16 mile allowance race at Hollywood Park on Sunday in his first race after returning from Dubai in March. The chestnut rated nicely just off the lead and gained command at the top of the stretch. He fought off an onslaught of challengers in a gritty finish to win by a head under jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr.
The Monashee Mountain gelding was saddled by assistant trainer Peter Gonzalez, who said, "It was a popular win for the barn. We are very pleased with the way he came back from Dubai."
Shamoan (IRE) has encountered stiff competition throughout most of his career and has been fairly consistent, hitting the board in six out of eight stakes races. His last victory was in the $250,000 Iowa Derby on July 1, 2005.
Bred in Ireland by Michael O'Mahony, Shamoan was purchased in September of 2004 and brought to the U.S. by Dick and Linda Laird. He has earned $346,098 since his arrival in North America.
"We're real tickled," said Gonzalez. "Eoin and the Lairds will have to put their heads together and decide where we go next."
