Darley's Bedford Falls soars at Belmont

Darley Stable's Bedford Falls soared to a decisive victory on Friday in a 1-mile Maiden Special Weight on the dirt at Belmont Park under jockey Garrett Gomez. The 3-year-old bay contested the pace from the start, gained command at the quarter pole, and drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths as the even money favorite.

"He ran a much-improved race to break his maiden today," said trainer Eoin Harty.

Originally scheduled for the turf, the race was taken off the grass due to heavy rains during the week. Darley CEO Jimmy Bell was on hand for the colt's victory. Bell said that he felt confident running on either surface and was vindicated with his decision.

"He's been very versatile on both surfaces, never finishing out of the money in his three previous starts," said Harty.

The Forestry colt was bred in Kentucky by Barnett Enterprises and was purchased at the 2004 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $1.1 million. He is out of the Affirmed mare Christmas in Aiken.
