Bettors overlook Gabriel's Hill
Darley Stable's Gabriel's Hill got the job done by a nose at Gulfstream Park on Friday in a Maiden Special Weight going 1 1/8 miles on the turf with Manoel Cruz in the irons. Going off at preposterous odds of 34 to 1, the 3-year-old colt settled well off a quick pace. He was checked slightly entering the backstretch and was forced to steady behind traffic on the far turn. He split rivals and responded gamely when asked. He closed strongly, battling for the lead to the wire with runner up Perfect Bullet and prevailed in the final yards. The final time was a respectable 1:46.4.
The A.P. Indy colt was making his third start while stretching to 1 1/8 miles and seemed to relish the extra distance. He finished 9th in his debut after missing the break and losing all chance on January 20th going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt. He came back on February 11th to finish a strong 3rd after running up on rivals' heels and being taken up sharply on the far turn going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Despite the huge improvement and the troubled trips in those races, the horse was absurdly overlooked by the bettors and paid a whopping $70.
Gabriel's Hill was bred in Kentucky by Gainsborough Farm, a subsidiary of Darley Stable. He is out of the Unfuwain mare Lailani (GB).
